What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is any type of dental procedure that is done while the patient receives Nitrous Oxide “Laughing gas”, IV sedation. This can be used to relieve pain and put an anxious patient at ease for a stress-free dental care experience.

What Are the Types of Sedation?

There are a few different sedation dentistry options available depending on your needs. The use of Nitrous Oxide is one type that is commonly used for less invasive procedures. The patient inhales the gas and is put into a relaxed state that can make the dental procedure run more smoothly.

Another option is IV sedation. IV sedation is when medication is administered directly to the patient through an IV. This type of sedation is often used for more invasive procedures or oral surgery. This type of sedation will cause a semi-awake state. You will be able to respond to instructions from your dentist, but you will not be fully awake. For some types of extensive dental surgery, general anesthesia might be used.

What Happens While I’m Sedated?

While you’re sedated, the dentist will perform the procedures you need while either an Anesthesiologist or a Nurse Anesthetist in the room is constantly monitoring your vitals making sure you are always at a safe and healthy level of sedation. If any adjustments need to be made, the procedure will be paused.

What Happens When I Come Out of Sedation?

When you are coming out from under sedation, you might feel as if no time has passed. You might also feel very groggy and will need to have arrangements for someone to drive you home as you won’t be able to drive yourself.

Now that you know a little bit more about sedation dentistry, you and your dentist can work together to choose the right types of treatment for you.
