Dentist Asheville NC
Dr. James J. Hogg, DDS, DABDSM
Diplomate – American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine
Dr. Hogg recently moved to the Asheville area from Chicago, IL. He graduated with honors from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 1984. After graduation, he was a clinical instructor at the dental school in the area of fixed prosthodontics. He owned a general restorative dental practice in the suburbs of Chicago for 25 years and started in the area of Dental Sleep Medicine in 2007 at the request of one of his patients who was suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The patient tried but could not tolerate wearing his CPAP machine. Over the past 10 years, he has treated over 2000 patients with this disorder. Dr. Hogg states “I especially love this area of dentistry because it can transform patients’ lives resulting in increased energy, focus and most importantly it helps to control the comorbid side effects of the disorder (high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, cancer, excessive sleepiness…)”.
In 2010, the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) awarded Dr. Hogg with Diplomate status, designating him as a highly skilled dentist with the in-depth knowledge, skill, and ability to treat patients with sleep-disordered breathing. In Chicago, he practiced in a multi-location Dental Sleep Medicine practice and was the Dental Sleep Medicine Director for two of the five practices. In these offices, he trained Sleep Medicine Physicians from the University of Chicago and Northwestern University Medical Fellowship Program in Dental Sleep Medicine. He now enjoys relationships with many of the sleep professionals in the Asheville area.
Dr. Hogg has lectured nationally to Dentists, Sleep Physicians, Respiratory Technicians, and ENT’s (Otolaryngologists) on the subject of Dental Sleep Medicine. He has also lectured to the dental resident students at the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) in Asheville, NC and at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. An active member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, he has served as the Chairman of the Educational Committee and the Essentials of Dental Sleep Medicine Course.
He and his wife, Deborah, enjoy spending time with their three children and especially their grandchild “Paddy”. Dr. Hogg enjoys hiking in the mountains, playing guitar and harmonica and listening to music in the numerous Asheville area breweries.
